We feel honoured to be part of the exhibition celebrating 40 years of Zaha Hadid – showcasing a timeline of the studio, using key projects, demonstrating her legacy and continued relevance today. Visit the Modern Art Museum in Shanghai to see our mutual journey towards “Interpreting The Ordinary Into Something Unexpected”.
Duna by Zaha Hadid
The exhibition also features our lighting pendant Duna which was inspired by the coherent yet abstract logic of dune formations that defy traditional Cartesian geometries. Its design concept is realized in a three dimensional, asymmetrical, pair of intersecting glass forms. The striated surface of the crystal glass produces ever-changing effects of reflection and refraction. Narrowly directed light sources beam light through the mass of glass into the entire glass element, highlighting its geometry.
“I know from my own experience that not much can be discovered without research and experimentation. With experimentation, you think you are going to find out one thing, but you actually discover something else. That’s what I find really exciting. You discover much more than you bargained for. I think there should be no end to experimentation.” – Zaha Hadid
‘ZHD was established to articulate Hadid’s contribution at another scale and beyond her work as an architect. From multi-media design research, to interactive spatial explorations, and product design exploring new mediums, her interests defined our objectives as a practice. What we have learned from Hadid, and how she shared her knowledge with her team, and her mentorship, has defined the intentions of the ZHD Studio.’ – Maha Kutay and Woody Yao, co-Directors of Zaha Hadid Design
