Walk on Clouds

Walk on Clouds

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to hover on clouds; to step onto the delicate white pillow and let yourself be carried away into a fairy-tale land? In the high-rise at 131 South Dearborn St., LASVIT worked in collaboration with Gensler Architects to make part of this fantasy real.

Step into the Fantasy

Walking to work to this skyscraper right in the heart of Chicago’s Loop district will now be an exhilarating experience. Instead of walking into an almost thirty-year-old lobby, the employees will get their head in the clouds.

The story behind the light

Inspiration

“I was inspired by the winter sky, when lots of little small rounded puffs of cloud filled the heavens above my head. These clouds are smaller than the width of your pinky finger and that is why I used small glass bubbles to represent them in the office building’s airy lobby space,“ says the designer Jana Růžičková.

Dimensions

4 200 kilograms of material hang above the heads of the tower’s visitors and employees. It is the weight of one whole elephant hanging from the ceiling.

Components

There are a total 925 shining glass bubbles made of crystal glass, and each bubble has its own light source.

Development and Installation

The project had to adjust to the client’s needs and to meet the plenum-rated ceiling codes. LASVIT came with a smart, simple solution.

I have always liked the simplicity of minimalism and this style is reflected in my designs. Glass is a magical material and a great medium to work with – always challenging, but always bringing new experiences.
