Nature of Awaji Island
In the grand lobby of the seaside hotel THE PASONA natureverse on Awaji Island, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Shigeru Ban, Lasvit created its largest immersive dynamic installation in Japan to date. The crystal chandelier is deeply connected to the waters surrounding the island, evoking seaweed, underwater grasses and stones, elements that embody both fragility and strength.
Wa and Ma
Suspended above the grand lobby, the luminous ceiling transforms into a poetic seascape inspired by Japan’s deep connection to the ocean. Glass stones shimmer like coastal rocks, while illuminated strands drift like seaweed in unseen currents. Guided by the Japanese concepts of Wa and Ma, the installation expresses harmony between permanence and impermanence, movement and stillness. At night, the gentle static light evokes the calmness of the sea and reflects the starlit sky visible through the skylight, creating a deeply tranquil and immersive atmosphere.
Four Tonnes, Suspended Against Gravity
Weighing approximately 4.3 tonnes, Nature of Awaji demanded an engineering solution as ambitious as its scale. With the ceiling structure already complete, Lasvit had to design the suspension and load distribution around the existing architecture while meeting stringent Japanese seismic requirements. Its position directly beneath the vast skylight made every structural decision even more exacting — turning an ethereal work of light and glass into a remarkable feat of precision engineering completed in just 6 months.
